The valley is situated between Diggle Lane and Holcombe Avenue. It originally continued across Newbold Street and down to the gasworks to Victoria Street. This derelict area was known locally as Mucklow,s. being the site of Mucklow’s Elton Fold Works. This area was used as landfill between 40 and 60 years ago and reclaimed and is now known as King George the V playing fields. Thus was born the council idea of a wildlife corridor from the centre of Bury to the Villages of Walshaw and Ainsworth. The valley has been closed to the public for perhaps one hundred years or more. Some 2/3 years ago we were asked at L.A.P. meetings to look at all the Council owned land in the valley and make suggestions as to its improvement. In 2010 we eventually established the area that was designated statutory allotment land and we are attempting to bring it back into cultivation. We have made a start on clearing and regenerating this land and have already removed 4 tons of rubbish and established an area of trees dedicated to loved ones.
Unfortunately over the years it has become a dumping ground for all kinds of household rubbish including tyres, window frames motorbikes, fridges, car parts and any debris that cannot be put into domestic bins.
